How X counts characters
X doesn't count every character the same way. The limit is 280, and X's own docs explain how a post adds up:
- Links count as 23, however long they are. Bare domains like example.com count too.
- Emoji count as 2, including flags and skin tones.
- Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters count as 2.
- Latin letters, numbers and most punctuation count as 1.
How the thread splitter works
It breaks at a paragraph where it can, then at a sentence, then at a word, so each post reads as a whole. Links are never cut in half. To choose a break yourself, put --- on its own line.
Number the posts if you want a count like 2/5 on each one. The number is included in the post's length.
Questions
What is the character limit on X?
280 for a standard post. X Premium subscribers can write up to 25,000 characters.
Does it match X exactly?
It follows twitter-text, X's open-source counting rules, and passes that project's test cases. X can change its rules, so if a post sits right at the limit, check it in X's composer.
Does it store my text?
Not on our side. The tool runs in your browser, and your text is never sent to us. Your browser keeps a copy until you close the tab, so a click away doesn't lose your draft.
